OK - if we're getting all "Four Yorkshiremen"...

Riiight Obadiah!

I work in Indonesia and live in the Philippines. So each week I get a 9am flight Monday morning that gets me to work for midday. I then leave Indo at 1am Saturday morning which gets me home for 6am ... half an hour before I went to bed.

Looking on the bright side of things for the OP, at least his commute means he's spending about an extra 20 hours or so a week away from Woolwich, that has to be a good thing.

For a year after my apprenticeship I commuted Chadwell Heath to Burnt Oak 7 days a week. That was around a straight 11 hour day.

The ONLY highlight was that I could vary my route slightly every day, should I have ever given a fuck.

Once a car pool was sorted, it became a little easier, but we all moved over that way within a couple of years anyway so didn't even get to use the "official" M25 for the journey.

Re: long commutes
When I was doing my apprenticeship I used to have to travel 1 hour 40 each way to get to my place of work as it was cheaper than living there.

3 years of hell on a train that was built in 1965... I started my apprenticeship in 2009.

Now, thankfully I can either work from home or the local office. So either a 30 second stumble straight from bed or a 20 minute bike ride.

Does Yarmouth to Muscat every 28 days count?

Re: long commutes
You've either got to love the place you live or its so much cheaper tha the combined cost of moving against the cost of travelling.

I'd prefer to live close and even moved my business once closer to my house.

Re: long commutes
A positive on a long (distance) commute is that you have no problem getting a seat on the way in, in the morning.

If you can do 4 10 hour days as opposed to 5 8 hour days, you can miss the worst of the rush hour at both ends of the day.

commuting from Shoreham by Sea recently due to Doris moving back to her parents with newborn, takes just over an hour in to Victoria, then a bus to Paddington.

Re: long commutes
I did 2 years between Poole & Holborn, during which I completed my years 3 & 4 work for my OU degree.

It did nearly kill me - I explained to my then wife that the days of me leaving home at 8:20 and being back before 5:30 (something she seemed to treasure) would be long gone, but she dismissed my concerns out of hand - turns out she had a different strategy for family life than the one I'd laid forth.

Once I'd been recognised a few times, it turned out that there were "regulars" on such a commute, and they all had "their seats": many of us struck up quite a friendship and at least one other was also studying on the trip (for a law degree). Within about 6 months, we'd formed a cribbage circle on the Wessex from Waterloo - first 4 on the 5:15 home played, others, if they were late, watched/learnt/got the beers in.

I believe I learnt as much "bonding" with that bunch of disparate commuters as I ever did doing my degree, and the "card school comments" - even the odd expletive - seemed to keep the rest of the carriage amused.

Would never do such a thing again though: if my office is further than I can piss from my balcony the commute is way too long.

Fair enough. I do the opposite direction every day - must be better that way around as generally takes 10 minutes

Re: long commutes

It's not the journey so much as the getting up early that is tiring. The nature of my job means I can get work done on the train which i would probably have to do in my spare time anyway so that at least is something.

It was quicker to walk to mansion house. Around that time you'd be lucky to get a circle line train every half hour. I think it's much better now though.
